Open the map at the entrance of a scenic spot and jump straight to \u201cnearby good shops.\u201d Even with just a half-day layover during a transfer, you can use the Street Scanning List to find authentic local snacks near the airport. This kind of seamless integration between \u201ctravel + consumption\u201d is something Meituan and Douyin currently can\u2019t match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Is Meituan Panicking? The \u201cDefense Paradox\u201d Behind the Counterattack<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Gaode\u2019s fierce offensive struck directly at Meituan\u2019s soft underbelly. As the long-standing \u201cbig brother\u201d of local life services, Meituan-Dianping has long relied on its rankings to generate nearly one-third of its in-store revenue. Yet, with more and more fake reviews and manipulated rankings, user trust in Dianping has long eroded, spawning \u201cfolk wisdom\u201d like \u201conly trust restaurants rated between 3.8\u20134.2.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Facing Gaode\u2019s surprise attack, Meituan quickly played two cards: first, it relaunched the \u201cPremium Takeout\u201d program, attempting to safeguard its reputation with supply chain strengths; second, it launched a food-centric social platform \u201cYami,\u201d featuring \u201cno ads, only real recommendations,\u201d inviting seasoned foodies to act as \u201crecommendation officers.\u201d Unfortunately, user scale remains under 1 million so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, Meituan\u2019s defense strategy can\u2019t avoid a fundamental \u201ccompetition paradox\u201d: in order to defend its in-store business, it must allocate resources to resist Gaode, which in turn dilutes focus and investment in its instant retail and takeout businesses. When platform revenue relies heavily on merchant promotion fees, \u201cabsolute authenticity\u201d is hard to sustain. This time, by betting on Gaode, it\u2019s clear Alibaba has learned from past mistakes. It didn\u2019t forcibly tie in Ele.me or Taobao Flash Sale, but allowed Gaode to \u201cgo solo,\u201d first establishing strong user awareness around the idea of \u201cauthentic rankings.\u201d After all, compared to \u201cordering takeout from a map,\u201d users are far more open to \u201cfinding reliable restaurants on a map.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n But challenges remain. First is how to sustain its promise of \u201cnever commercializing.\u201d Gaode currently charges no merchant listing fees and takes no ads, but the operating cost for 400 million users and the 1 billion CNY (approx. 140 million USD) in subsidies can\u2019t rely on Alibaba\u2019s deep pockets forever. Second is data blind spots: the ranking depends on navigation data, but many local regulars or neighborhood diners don\u2019t need navigation\u2014so these \u201chidden gems\u201d are easily overlooked. Finally, there\u2019s the issue of synergy within the Alibaba ecosystem. At present, the Street Scanning List hasn\u2019t been integrated with Alipay or Ele.me. After finding a restaurant on Gaode, users still need to jump to other apps to place an order, which is not seamless. If in the future they can build a closed loop of \u201csee list \u2013 navigate \u2013 pay \u2013 redeem,\u201d Gaode\u2019s competitiveness could rise to another level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The \u201cThree Kingdoms\u201d of Local Life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, the local life arena is no longer just a \u201ctwo-player duel.\u201d Gaode has opened a wedge with \u201cauthentic behavioral data,\u201d Meituan defends its position with \u201csupply chain + quality control,\u201d and Douyin steadily eats away at younger demographics with its short video content ecosystem. All three have their strengths\u2014but also face the same problem: how to rebuild trust between users and merchants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What consumers want has never been \u201ca perfect 4.8 rating,\u201d but rather \u201ca reliable choice without traps.\u201d What merchants need isn\u2019t \u201cshort-term traffic bought with burning cash,\u201d but \u201ca fair chance to be seen through quality alone.\u201d From this perspective, the success of Gaode\u2019s Street Scanning List is essentially a victory of \u201csincerity\u201d over \u201ctactics.\u201d But this war has only just begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As Meituan starts purging fake reviews, as Douyin experiments with \u201creal in-store data\u201d to create its own rankings\u2014how long can Gaode maintain its \u201cfirst-mover advantage\u201d?
