A pair of yoga pants was regarded as a middle-class staple; a hair tie priced at USD 11 was being scalped by resellers for nearly USD 139; its market cap once surpassed Adidas, securing its position as the world’s second-largest athletic brand, earning it the title of “the Hermès of yoga.” Yet in just two years, this once-glittering brand has been completely dethroned: its market cap has plummeted from a peak of USD 64.3 billion to USD 18 billion, a decline of more than 72%, wiping out USD 46.3 billion — equivalent to the erasure of one and a half Adidases. Its fiscal year 2025 revenue growth hit its lowest level since the IPO in 2007, net profit fell sharply by 13%, and its core Americas market came to a complete standstill. From universally coveted to cast aside by capital, from high-end and professional to “mediocre and unremarkable” — what exactly has lululemon been through?

Performance Comes to a Complete Halt: Revenue Up, Profits Down, Core Engine Stalls

In March 2026, the fiscal year 2025 earnings report released by lululemon threw cold water on all its admirers. This report card, riddled with the embarrassment of faltering growth, completely shattered the high-growth mythology it had sustained for years.

According to the earnings data, lululemon’s global net revenue for fiscal year 2025 was USD 11.1 billion, up only 4.86% year-on-year — barely maintaining single-digit growth — setting a new record for the slowest growth rate since the company’s IPO. It is worth noting that its annual revenue growth had long maintained double-digit rates. By comparison, On Running posted 30% growth and Arc’teryx’s parent company 27%, leaving lululemon far behind its peers.

More alarming than the revenue slowdown was the divergence between revenue and profit: full-year net profit came in at USD 1.579 billion, down nearly 13% year-on-year; fourth-quarter net profit plunged even more sharply by 21.52% to just USD 587 million. Gross margin contracted significantly by 550 basis points, falling to 54.9%, puncturing the industry myth of its high premium and high margins.

The core reason for the performance collapse is the complete stalling of the Americas market — lululemon’s foundational base. The Americas accounts for more than 70% of lululemon’s revenue, yet it experienced its first decline in fiscal year 2025: net revenue fell 1% year-on-year to USD 7.847 billion, its revenue share dropped from 74.9% to 70.7%, same-store sales declined 3%, and single-quarter revenue in the U.S. market fell 4%.

This means that the domestic growth engine that underpinned lululemon’s rise has completely stalled. Inventory buildup became the final straw that crushed profitability: by the end of fiscal year 2025, the company’s inventory had surged 18% year-on-year to USD 1.7 billion, far outpacing revenue growth. In order to clear inventory, lululemon was forced to break its premium “almost never discounts” positioning by intensifying promotional activity — price reductions alone dragged gross margin down by 1.3 percentage points. On top of this, the USD 275 million in costs resulting from U.S. tariff increases has continued to squeeze the profit margin.

Management is also deeply pessimistic about the future, projecting global net revenue growth of only 2% to 4% for 2026, a continued decline of 1% to 3% in the Americas market, and further reductions in operating margin and gross margin. The growth difficulties show no sign of easing in the near term.

The Brand Has Lost Its Soul: From Professional Niche to Viral Trend-Chaser, Nothing Left But the “Hair Tie Hype”

Behind the performance stall lies lululemon’s complete abandonment of its founding principles — its transformation from a high-end athletic brand focused on professional performance into an ordinary brand chasing viral moments and online traffic. Founder Chip Wilson’s public attacks have torn open the brand’s internal wounds for all to see.

Wilson had once given lululemon a clear positioning: serve the “Super Girls” — 32-year-old, highly educated, refinement-seeking women earning USD 100,000 to USD 150,000 a year — and build an unrivaled premium identity through exceptional fabrics and professional yoga equipment. This was the core of what made it the “Hermès of yoga.”

The current management has completely abandoned this direction. In pursuit of scale and short-term results, they shifted focus from “obsessing over fabric technology” to “style activation and rapid product turnover,” even eliminating the Chief Product Officer position and completely abandoning product innovation. Consumers have complained that new products from lululemon are now few and far between: in 2025, the new product penetration rate was only 23%, and what passes as “new” is little more than a “color palette game” of recolored existing items. Several new product lines were pulled and recalled due to poor fit and material problems.

With product innovation exhausted, lululemon has resorted to entry-level accessories to generate buzz. A hair tie made from ordinary, extremely low-cost materials, officially priced at USD 11, saw limited-edition colors scalped to USD 139, a premium of more than eleven times. Shoes resembling old-school Beijing cloth slippers — dubbed “abbess shoes” — and tacky leopard-print shorts drew attention through novelty, but carried no professional value whatsoever.

Apparel industry experts have stated bluntly: leveraging social currency items like hair ties to harvest traffic is fundamentally an act of desperation from a brand that has run out of innovation and has no new story to tell. Excessive reliance on marketing hype and frequent discounting has rapidly eroded lululemon’s premium image. What was once a “middle-class badge of honor” is now mockingly referred to as “yoga pants from the outer suburbs,” with none of the exclusivity that once defined it.

Internal governance has descended into chaos as well: the CEO who had steered the company for seven years was forced out, a successor has yet to be named, and the founder, the board, and an activist investment fund have become embroiled in a three-way battle for control, leaving the strategic direction in complete disarray. A brand that cannot even articulate its own direction will naturally struggle to retain core consumers and will fail to attract capital.

The China Market: A Lifeline That Cannot Fill the Global Gap

Against a backdrop of deeply disappointing global performance, the China market has become lululemon’s only fig leaf — and its last source of confidence in maintaining scale.

In fiscal year 2025, net revenue from mainland China reached USD 1.755 billion, up 28.96% year-on-year. Fourth-quarter growth remained as high as 24%, far exceeding the global average. China’s revenue share has risen from single digits to 16%, cementing its position as the second-largest market globally. Lululemon plans to open 40 to 45 new directly operated stores in 2026, the majority of which will be located in China, continuing to push into lower-tier markets.

This high growth has been driven by Chinese middle-class consumers’ appetite for premium athletic brands, as well as lululemon’s channel expansion and e-commerce development domestically. One could say that Chinese consumers have effectively propped up lululemon’s dignity, allowing it to maintain a revenue scale in the tens of billions even as it decelerates globally.

But the China market is ultimately nothing more than a lifeline — too small in absolute terms to compensate for the enormous hole left by the Americas. The Americas generates nearly USD 8 billion in annual revenue; even a 1% decline in that market produces revenue losses that far exceed the incremental gains from China’s 20%-plus growth. A fast-growing “small piece” simply cannot offset a continuously shrinking “large piece.”

More sobering still is the fact that the growth dividend in the China market is rapidly fading. International competitor Alo Yoga has made a forceful entry into China, with a consumer overlap with lululemon of more than 60%, directly siphoning off the core customer base. MAIA ACTIVE, under the Anta umbrella, is rapidly capturing market share with products that better fit Asian body types at lower price points. Countless alternative brands have proliferated, delivering comparable quality at a fraction of the price and continuously eroding lululemon’s pricing power.

The high growth of the present moment is nothing more than a short-term dividend from market white space and brand halo. As competition intensifies and the base grows higher, growth in the China market will inevitably slow, and lululemon’s last remaining safety cushion will gradually lose its effectiveness.

Lululemon’s decline is a reflection of countless viral brands before it: rising on the strength of precise positioning and professional capability, winning a loyal following, and building powerful brand premium — only to be captured by capital, blindly pursue scale expansion, abandon the product core, and overdraw the brand’s identity, ultimately losing the very moat that protected it.

The China market can save lululemon for a time, but not forever. If management continues to fail to return to the product fundamentals, repair the brand identity, and address the predicament of its core market, then even with Chinese middle-class consumers propping it up for a few more years, it will eventually be abandoned entirely by consumers and capital alike.

After all, consumers are willing to pay for professionalism and quality — but they will never keep paying indefinitely for hollow marketing and a faded brand premium.

[Disclaimer]: The above content reflects analysis of publicly available information, expert insights, and BCC research.
